The Afghanistan national football team, governed by the Afghanistan Football Federation, was founded in 1933 and became a FIFA member in 1948. Based in Kabul, the team competes in AFC World Cup qualifying rounds and the SAFF Championship, representing one of Asia's developing football nations. Afghanistan achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup for the first time in 2023, reaching the tournament held in Qatar. Long hampered by political instability and infrastructure challenges, the team has gradually developed its playing standards.
