Penarol
Club Atlético Peñarol, founded in 1891 by British railway workers and formally reconstituted under its Uruguayan identity in 1913-14, is the most decorated club in Uruguayan football history and one of the great powers of South American football, declared by IFFHS the South American Club of the Century in 2009. The club plays at the magnificent Estadio Campeón del Siglo in Montevideo, a state-of-the-art 40,000-capacity arena opened in 2016 and built entirely with club resources. Peñarol have won over 50 Primera División titles and five Copa Libertadores (1960, 1961, 1966, 1982, 1987), including the competition's first two editions, along with three Intercontinental Cups. Legends include Obdulio Varela, the imperious captain of Uruguay's legendary 1950 World Cup triumph, and Alberto Spencer, the Copa Libertadores all-time top scorer. Their fierce rivalry with Nacional in the Clásico del Fútbol Uruguayo is the oldest derby in South American football.
