FC Shakhtar Donetsk, founded in 1936 in the coal-mining city of Donetsk in Ukraine and named after the Ukrainian word for miner, were transformed into an elite European club by billionaire owner Rinat Akhmetov from 1995, constructing the spectacular 52,000-seat Donbass Arena and building a squad famous for importing Brazilian talent. Under Romanian legend Mircea Lucescu over 16 years, Shakhtar won 8 Ukrainian league titles and their greatest honour — the 2009 UEFA Cup, defeating Werder Bremen 2-1 in Istanbul. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 forced the club into exile, playing home games in Gelsenkirchen and other European venues while continuing to win domestic titles and compete in the Champions League as an extraordinary symbol of Ukrainian resilience. Their survival and success under the conditions of war has earned global admiration.
