Fenerbahce Spor Kulubu is more than a football club -- it is one of the most powerful and passionately supported sporting institutions in the world. Founded in 1907 in the Kadikoy district on the Asian side of Istanbul, Fenerbahce holds the honour of being the most successful club in Turkish football history, having won a record 28 Turkish national championship titles, comprising 19 Super Lig, six National Division, and three Football Championship titles. The club holds a Guinness World Record for the highest total number of medals and trophies across all sports branches, with over 1,100 cups and medals accumulated since its founding. Fenerbahce are also historically significant in a broader regional context: in 1968, they won the Balkans Cup, making them the first Turkish football club to claim an international trophy. The club's home district of Kadikoy -- a bohemian, culturally vibrant quarter of Istanbul -- has always been a defining part of the Fenerbahce identity, and the passionate yellow-and-navy fanbase is considered one of the most vocal and numerous in European football. The list of legendary players who have worn the canary-yellow shirt reads like a who's who of global football. Brazilian midfielder Alex de Souza spent a decade at Kadikoy and is worshipped as a deity by supporters, his statue standing proudly outside the stadium. Roberto Carlos, Dusan Tadic, Dirk Kuyt, Pierre van Hooijdonk, Robin van Persie, Mesut Ozil, and Edin Dzeko all brought their world-class talents to the club. More recently, Fenerbahce demonstrated their eye for developing young talent by nurturing Arda Guler -- the Turkish wonderkid who transferred to Real Madrid in 2023 -- and Ferdi Kadioglu, who progressed through the club's system before moving to Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League. The club's stadium, officially known as Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, is a 50,530-capacity fortress in Kadikoy that hosted the last-ever UEFA Cup Final in 2009, when Shakhtar Donetsk defeated Werder Bremen. The ground's deafening atmosphere is legendary across Europe. In June 2024, Fenerbahce made a global headline by appointing Jose Mourinho -- one of the most celebrated and controversial managers in football history, twice winner of the Champions League -- as their head coach. The appointment raised expectations dramatically for a club that had not won the Super Lig since the 2013-14 season. However, Mourinho's reign proved turbulent: while certain tactical and structural improvements were made, Fenerbahce finished second in the 2024-25 Super Lig season, 11 points behind champions Galatasaray. The Portuguese manager departed in August 2025 after failing to secure Champions League qualification. The episode nonetheless underscored the scale of Fenerbahce's ambitions, their financial muscle, and their determination to reclaim domestic supremacy and build on their European legacy. With millions of supporters worldwide and a club infrastructure befitting one of football's great institutions, Fenerbahce remain a major force in Turkish and European football.
