The Tanzania national football team, nicknamed Taifa Stars, is governed by the Football Association of Tanzania, founded in 1930. Tanzania has been a regular participant in AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations) qualifying and qualified for the tournament in 2019, their first appearance since 1980. Playing at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, the team draws on a passionate footballing culture. Historically overshadowed by East African rivals Kenya and Uganda, Tanzania has been investing in domestic football development to improve its regional standing. Notable players include Mbwana Samatta, who became the first Tanzanian to play in the UEFA Champions League while at Club Brugge and later Aston Villa, raising the profile of Tanzanian football significantly on the world stage.
