Sporting Gijón

Sporting de Gijon, founded in 1905, is one of the oldest and most historically significant football clubs in northern Spain. Based in Gijon, Asturias, the club plays at Estadio Municipal El Molinon-Enrique Castro Quini, a 29,538-capacity ground that is the oldest active stadium in Spain. Sporting spent many years in La Liga and is fondly remembered for their 1970s and 1980s squads, which featured Enrique Castro 'Quini,' one of the greatest Spanish strikers of that generation. The club has historically been a stepping stone for talented Asturian players entering top-flight football. Despite relegation battles in recent decades, Sporting retains a fervent fanbase and strong regional identity. They compete in the Segunda Division and periodically challenge for promotion to La Liga, keeping alive the ambitions of one of Spanish football's most traditional clubs.
