Athletic Club

Athletic Club — universally known as Athletic Bilbao — is one of the most unique and fascinating institutions in world football, a club that has operated under a self-imposed philosophy that sets it entirely apart from any other professional team on the planet. Based in the Basque Country city of Bilbao in northern Spain, Athletic Club was formed in the late 19th century through the convergence of two distinct influences: British workers employed in Bilbao's thriving industrial port who brought the game of football with them from England, and Basque students returning home from schools in Britain where they had learned to play. The club was officially constituted in its current form around 1901-1903, and from the very beginning it adopted the 'cantera' policy — a commitment to fielding only players who were born in or developed through the Basque Country. This philosophy, unique in professional football, means that Athletic has never signed a player who was not Basque or who did not develop through Basque football — a restriction that has never prevented the club from competing at the highest levels of Spanish and European football for over a century. Their home, the spectacular San Mamés stadium, rebuilt and reopened on the same site in 2013, holds 53,289 spectators and has won multiple awards for its architecture and matchday experience. The original San Mamés, nicknamed 'La Catedral' (The Cathedral), stood on the site from 1913 and was an iconic fortress of European football. Athletic's trophy record is the envy of many far larger clubs. They have won the Copa del Rey 24 times — second only to FC Barcelona in the all-time list — and the La Liga title eight times, most recently in 1983-84. Perhaps most remarkably, Athletic Club are one of only three clubs in Spanish football history — alongside Real Madrid and FC Barcelona — never to have been relegated from the top division since its inception in 1929. This extraordinary feat of sustained excellence, achieved while operating under a policy that restricts their transfer market to Basque players, speaks to the depth of talent produced by the region and the quality of the club's famous academy system, known as Lezama. One of the club's most celebrated historic achievements came in 1958, when they defeated a star-studded Real Madrid side — including the legendary Alfredo Di Stéfano, fresh from back-to-back European Cup wins — 2-0 in the Copa del Generalísimo final. In 2024, Athletic ended a 40-year wait for major silverware by winning the Copa del Rey, defeating Mallorca in a Seville final, bringing the city of Bilbao to euphoric celebration. Throughout their history, Athletic has produced players of the very highest calibre. Telmo Zarra — who made his debut in 1941 — is the club's all-time top scorer with 251 goals and held the record for the most La Liga goals in history for over 60 years, eventually surpassed only by Lionel Messi. Rafael Gordillo, José Ángel Iribar, and Andoni Zubizarreta are among the great Basque footballers who became household names in the red and white stripes. In the modern era, brothers Iñaki Williams and Nico Williams have emerged as stars of global stature — Nico in particular dazzling at UEFA Euro 2024 where he scored the opening goal as Spain defeated England in the final, before signing a remarkable ten-year contract extension tying him to Athletic until 2035. The club qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2014/15 at the end of the 2024/25 La Liga season, demonstrating that their unique footballing identity is fully capable of meeting the demands of elite European competition. Manager Ernesto Valverde, who previously coached the club to success before his celebrated spell at FC Barcelona, returned to guide Athletic into this new chapter of their history.
