The Senegal national football team, known as the Lions of Teranga, is one of Africa's most celebrated sides. Governed by the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football, the team made history at the 2002 FIFA World Cup by reaching the quarter-finals on debut, defeating holders France in the group stage. Senegal won their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021 (held in 2022) under coach Aliou Cissé, and were runners-up in 2019. The team is built around world-class talent including Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Édouard Mendy. Senegal has consistently qualified for recent World Cups and participated in Qatar 2022, reaching the round of 16. The Lions play home matches at the Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium in Dakar and are perennial contenders for continental honours.
