The Netherlands national football team, known as the Oranje or the Dutch, is one of the world's most celebrated football nations, governed by the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), founded in 1889. The Netherlands reached three FIFA World Cup finals (1974, 1978, 2010), winning the 1988 UEFA European Championship in dominant fashion. Renowned for the Total Football philosophy pioneered by Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff in the 1970s, the Dutch have produced generational talent including Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Dennis Bergkamp, Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, and more recently Virgil van Dijk and Memphis Depay. The team plays at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. After a mid-2010s decline, the Netherlands returned to form, reaching the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals and remaining a top-tier European nation.
