The Mozambique national football team, known as the Mambas, is governed by the Federação Moçambicana de Futebol and competes within the Confederation of African Football. Founded in 1976 following independence from Portugal, the team has participated in AFCON qualification campaigns and COSAFA Cup regional competitions. Mozambique's most notable qualification came in 1986 when they appeared in the Africa Cup of Nations finals. The team plays home matches at the Estádio Nacional do Zimpeto in Maputo, which holds over 42,000 spectators and was opened in 2011. Notable players from Mozambique include the legendary Eusébio, who was born in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) and became one of football's greatest ever players, though he represented Portugal during his career. The federation continues to develop domestic football infrastructure and youth programs.
