The Maldives national football team, governed by the Football Association of Maldives, has competed under FIFA since 1986. The island nation has primarily competed in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship and AFC qualifying rounds. Maldives won the SAFF Championship in 2008, defeating India in the final, which remains their greatest international achievement. The team plays home matches at Galolhu National Stadium in Male, the country's capital. Due to the archipelago's geography and small population of around 500,000, football development has faced unique logistical challenges. The Maldives national league, the Dhivehi Premier League, serves as the primary player development pathway. Notable players include Ali Ashfaq, the SAFF Championship's all-time leading scorer, who became a national icon. The federation continues working to improve standards and develop young talent across the island communities.
