The Kazakhstan national football team, governed by the Football Federation of Kazakhstan, moved from the AFC to UEFA in 2002, competing in European qualifying groups. This transition brought the side into contact with stronger European opposition, helping develop football standards domestically. Kazakhstan has shown occasional upsets in qualifying campaigns against higher-ranked European sides and has competed in the UEFA Nations League. The national team draws players from the Kazakhstan Premier League as well as players competing abroad.
