Genoa CFC, founded on September 7, 1893, primarily by British expatriates in the Ligurian port city, is the oldest football club in Italy still competing professionally, retaining the English spelling of 'Genoa' as a proud legacy of its origins. The club plays at the historic Stadio Luigi Ferraris (Marassi) in Genoa, opened in 1911 and Italy's oldest professional ground still in use. Genoa won nine Italian Championships between 1898 and 1924 — including the very first national title in 1898 — as well as the Coppa Italia in 1937. After years in and out of Serie A, the club secured promotion in 2023 and appointed Patrick Vieira as head coach in 2024, who guided them to top-flight survival with a dramatic final-day victory. The club's griffin emblem and passionate fanbase remain enduring symbols of northern Italian football heritage.
