The Indonesia national football team, known as the Garuda, is governed by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) and competes in AFC competitions. Indonesia has a passionate football culture, with one of the largest fan bases in Southeast Asia. The country participated in the 1938 FIFA World Cup under the name Dutch East Indies, making them the first Asian team to compete at a World Cup. Indonesia has won the AFF Championship and regularly participates in the Southeast Asian Games football competitions. Recent years have seen significant improvement, particularly with the naturalization of Dutch-Indonesian players. The country is co-hosting the 2023 U-20 World Cup (which was later reassigned) and is part of the joint bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, reflecting their growing ambitions.
