Iceland
Iceland's national football team achieved one of football's greatest modern fairy tales, stunning the world at UEFA Euro 2016 by reaching the quarter-finals and defeating England in the round of 16. Managed by Heimir Hallgrímsson and Lars Lagerbäck, Iceland became the smallest nation ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup, appearing at the 2018 World Cup in Russia where they drew against Argentina. The team is known for its iconic Viking Thunder Clap celebration. Notable players include Eidur Gudjohnsen, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Birkir Bjarnason, and Ragnar Sigurdsson. Iceland's success is attributed to a strong youth development system established in the early 2000s. Though results have fluctuated since 2018, the football culture and infrastructure built during this golden era continues to bear fruit.
