Guinea-Bissau
The Guinea-Bissau national football team, nicknamed the Djurtus (Wild Dogs), has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent decades. Founded after independence in 1974 and affiliated with CAF, the side made a historic debut at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017, qualifying for their first major tournament and capturing national pride. The team draws heavily on the Guinean diaspora in Portugal, with players like Pelé (Frederic Mendy) and Zezinho contributing to their surge in quality. Coach Baciro Candé has been instrumental in building team cohesion. Though still developing, Guinea-Bissau has become a competitive force in West African football, regularly participating in AFCON qualifications and inspiring a new generation of young footballers at home.
