Olympique Lyonnais, officially founded on 3 August 1950 in France's third-largest city, achieved a historic record of seven consecutive Ligue 1 championships from 2001-02 to 2007-08 — a feat unmatched in French football. The club plays at the Groupama Stadium in Décines-Charpieu, a 59,000-seat modern arena opened in 2016. Lyon have won seven Ligue 1 titles, five Coupe de France trophies, and were a consistent UEFA Champions League presence during their dominant era, defeating Real Madrid, Juventus, and Manchester United along the way. Among the club's most celebrated alumni are Karim Benzema, Michael Essien, and Juninho Pernambucano, whose extraordinary free-kicks made him a cult hero.
