Match Report
Lecce stun Venezia with clinical second-half strike
Lecce left the Penzo with a statement 2-0 win, despite Venezia dominating possession for long stretches in their first home Serie A game back after a year away. The visitors made their spells of pressure count, while the hosts couldn't turn control into goals.
VAR shaped a chaotic afternoon. Correia thought he'd opened the scoring early on, but the goal was chalked off for a handball in the buildup. Lecce broke the deadlock seconds into the second half when Gorter pounced on a loose ball and drilled a deflected effort past Stankovic in the 46th minute. Basic had a leveller ruled out for offside in the 72nd, before Tiago Gabriel headed in Danilo Veiga's cross in the 80th to seal it. Stulic spurned a glaring late chance for the hosts.
It's a rough start for newly promoted Venezia, undone by defensive lapses despite dominating the ball, while Lecce banked an early away win to kick off their campaign with confidence.
