Match Report

Tottenham produced a gutsy second-leg display but couldn't overturn a 5-2 first-leg deficit as Atletico Madrid advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals 7-5 on aggregate, despite losing 3-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Randal Kolo Muani headed in Mathys Tel's pinpoint cross on 30 minutes to give Spurs hope. Julian Alvarez struck back for Atletico just after the break (47'), but Xavi Simons curled home a beauty on 52 minutes to restore the lead. David Hancko nodded in from a corner (75') before Simons completed his brace from the penalty spot in stoppage time (90'+1) after Jose Gimenez brought him down in the box. The night began chaotically for Spurs, with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky hauled off after just 17 minutes following a shaky start, replaced by Guglielmo Vicario. Despite the spirited win, the damage from Madrid proved too great. Atletico march on to face Barcelona in the last eight, while Spurs bow out with a consolation victory and plenty of questions about their European future.
