Match Report
Mirassol Sink LDU Quito with Second-Half Double in Libertadores
Mirassol made a statement at home, defeating LDU Quito 2-0 in Group G of the Copa Libertadores on May 7. Goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle was the visitors' standout, making a string of saves that kept the score from getting ugly, without him, it could have been far worse.
Both goals came after the break. Lucas Oliveira broke the deadlock in the 46th minute, pouncing on a scramble of rebounds in the box. Mirassol doubled the lead through Reinaldo, who tucked away a penalty in the 60th minute after Valle had fouled a Brazilian striker. Tensions spilled over late on, with visiting coach Nunes demanding "more respect" from the touchline in the 88th minute.
The defeat hit LDU Quito hard, the Ecuadorians arrived as Group G leaders but left in third place. Mirassol, meanwhile, climbed the standings and served notice that they belong in this competition.
