Vitória SC vs FC Arouca

Vitória Guimarães made all the running in their Primeira Liga opener but had nothing to show for it, slipping to a 0-1 home defeat against Arouca. The hosts carved out chance after chance across both halves, yet couldn't beat a resilient away side that made the most of its one real opening. The breakthrough came in the 53rd minute, when a mix-up at the back let Nais Djouahra in behind; he squared the ball for Iván Barbero, who finished for the game's only goal. Vitória pushed hard for an equalizer, with Samu and Telmo Arcanjo both going close, while Arouca's afternoon got tougher late on when Diogo Monteiro was shown a straight red in stoppage time, leaving the visitors to see out the final minutes a man short. It's a rough start for Vitória Guimarães under new coach Tiago Margarido, who had talked up reviving the club's old mystique before a ball was kicked, instead they must regroup after squandering a dominant display. For Arouca, it's the perfect opening statement, three points on the road, even with a red card to manage heading into matchday two.
