Gent vs Standard Liège

KAA Gent edged past Standard Liège 2-1 at the Planet Group Arena, with a late header from an unlikely source settling a tense Pro League clash. Centre-back Christian Burgess rose highest to power home the winner, sending the home crowd into raptures and keeping Gent's unbeaten run alive. Josué Vergara had given the hosts a perfect start, finishing coolly in the 31st minute after Standard's defense switched off. Standard hit back just before the break as Casper Nielsen converted from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time. Gent's Stef Van der Heyden picked up a booking as the game turned feisty, before Burgess struck in the 83rd minute to restore the lead for good. The win lifts Gent to the top of the Pro League table, unbeaten through seven rounds and piling pressure on Union SG, Club Brugge, and Charleroi. Standard remain sixth, still short of the consistency needed to break into the top four.
